Apple introduced the Mac App Store by the end of 2010. PortraiMatic is available on Apple's Store since February and we knew that it would quickly become our main selling channel. Today, 90% of our sales are made through the Mac App Store.
We kept selling PortraiMatic on our web site because computers under Mac OS 10.5 do not run the Mac App Store application. But really, selling on our web site is a hassle, for accounting reasons and difficulties people meet to unlock the software. So we decided that we would only sell on the Mac App Store by now.
If you bought PortraiMatic on ceroce.com, don't worry: we will keep on proposing a "trial version" which you can unlock using your unlock key, and so you will still be able to get updates. For the moment, the compatibility with Mac OS 10.5 is maintained.

As some users signaled me, the current version (2.0.2) of PortraiMatic is not compatible with Lion (OS 10.7). There are at least two issues:
I'm working on these issues and I hope I can provide a new version quickly. Stay tuned.

At last, Apple's team has validated PortraiMatic which is now available on the Mac App Store.
If your computer permits it (Mac OS 10.6.6 minimum), we encourage you to buy it through Apple's Store, which makes purchasing, unlocking and updating easier.
Note: We're having a problem with the app's description being shown in French in almost every country but US. We contacted Apple, and we hope they will provide us with a mean to fix this issue (so the description shows in English).

A new release of PortraiMatic was published yesterday. Let us see what is new:
Creating a portrait is now more straight:
![]()
The one of the left shows the file picker. The one of the right shows the window to take snapshots using the webcam.
This version was essentially a chance to prepare PortraiMatic to be sent on the Mac App Store; the application has been submitted to Apple and will be available after it's been validated — within a week if all goes well.
The Mac App Store is really good news for users: it makes buying, installing, uninstalling et updating the application much easier. There is no unlocking mechanism needed either.
Céroce earns less on each copy sold on the Mac App Store, as Apple takes a 30% commission when our current payment system takes about 15%. That being said, we hope to gain visibility, and accounting should be easier.
We intend to continue selling PortraiMatic through our web site, so users under Mac OS 10.5 can still use it, and so potential clients can try it before buying.

A new version of PortraiMatic, numbered 2.0.1, has been released on Monday. This version fixes a major bug: portraits which proportions were not 45 x 35 mm were pinched, but only for sheets to print.
Users who use "non-standard" formats (such as the US format or custom formats) will be glad.
To update, launch PortraiMatic then go to the PortraiMatic > Preferences > Updates, then click the Update Now button.
Should you discover any defect in PortraiMatic, don't hesitate to tell us. We'll fix the problem within the best delays.

The version of PortraiMatic was released yesterday. Let's see what's new.
Here is the new main window:

The driving idea was that the application should integrate better with Mac OS 10.6. I hope you're convinced by the result.
In previous versions, for reasons of development time, the main window used to have a fixed size. It is now resizable so it can be deployed on the whole screen.
This allowed to increase slightly the maximum value for the portrait's zoom (from x2 to x2.5): this value is a compromise with the length of the bar so the slider remains easy to handle with a mouse or a trackpad. A wider window allows for a longer bar, hence a greater zoom factor.
We have decided that upgrading from version 1 to version 2 would be free. You trusted our small company during the past year and we wanted to thank you.
Passing from version 1 to version 2 with so few changes might seem pompous. In fact, PortraiMatic is going to evolve within the next year, by integrating the features you asked us.

I have not given any news since more than a month. That is mostly because I'm busy working on an iPhone application, but also because I'm working on PortraiMatic version 2.0.
I must say that there won't be a ton of new features for this version. I plan to continue working like I did on the past year: release new versions frequently, climbing small steps one at a time. So don't expect a revolution.
So far I planned two important changes:
Much of the work has already been done. The new version is gorgeous, really, but I won't present you any screen shot today to reserve the surprise.
These two have been big issues since the launch of version 1.0. I'll explain those issues an other time, but they are annoying enough to change the Licensing scheme entirely.
PortraiMatic 2.0 should be released in a few weeks. Stay tuned !

I was very reluctant to add the possibility of shooting photos using the webcam in PortraiMatic. However, version 1.4 did introduce this feature, which I included for two reasons. The first one is that, since version 1.0, a lot of users asked me to. The second one is I thought it was more selling if someone could test PortraiMatic quickly, without needing to improvise a photo session, and then have to connect the camera to the computer.
I was very reluctant because there is no way you can get quality portraits out of the iSight:
480 pixels on a portrait with a (standard) height of 45 mm corresponds to a resolution of 480 dots/(45 mm/25.4) = 271 dots per inch. It's not that awful, but it's not optimal either, since you will have to rescale the photograph, and the resolution will be even lower.
You have to hold your 3 kg laptop in front of your face, and then press the Return key. It's way easier when someone else shoots you with a camera.
In conclusion: Shoot pictures with a camera. Really.

I've just released a new version in emergency. It fixes two bugs that would make the application crash.
When the last portrait was deleted from the Gallery, the application would crash as soon as one switched to the Save or to the Print tabs. It's all my fault, I forgot to test this special case. No-one reported that bug to me, which I discovered when trying to fix the other bug. Indeed, users probably don't try to delete the last portrait, and a blank portrait is created at the first launch.
I had a difficult time figuring what induced that bug that led the computers of two of my clients, Leticia and Michel, to crash. I'm seizing this occasion to thank them both for their patience those last days, when I sent them successively new versions which didn't work. Thank you again. It's always very hard to solve a bug that I can't reproduce.
Now for the technical explanation: when a new portrait is created, PortraiMatic detects which is the country of your computer and automatically selects the portrait format that corresponds to this country. For that purpose, it asks the operating system through Cocoa's NSLocale class. I don't know how it determines the country, but it does not use the settings of the International Preferences pane, I know for sure: I created a "Spanish" user account on my (French) computer, and still the country selected by PortraiMatic was France. Finally, I get the impression that the OS might use the info provided by the user the first time she starts up the Mac.
What happens for a few clients is that NSLocale does not return the country: hence, the portrait format adopted by PortraiMatic had null dimensions, and the program would crash voluntary. To work around this problem, my technique is to see if the country is valid, and if not, consider that the country is France. It does not crash anymore, but some rare users will have to select their country manually in the list, which is much less pain than a crash, you'd admit.

I have not polled my customers but I guess that the two main reasons why they buy PortraiMatic are the price of photo sheets in a photo booth and the convenience. However, I created PortraiMatic with a different motivation in mind.
When I had to make a new id card for myself, I shot passport portraits using a photo booth of the most popular company in France. The result was OK, not more: lighting was good, but the resolution of the photo was too low: aliasing could clearly be seen. More, I was in a hurry when I came in, walking very fast: my cheeks had a rosy shade.
However, the more disturbing was the experience: the face had to fit in a template displayed onto the screen. Because I'm tall enough and the stool was already at its lower height, I had to act the tortoise, putting my head in and out between my shoulders until my face was aligned. On two occasions, the machine told me that the photo was not framed correctly and I had to shoot it again, but within a three-attempts limit (because other client might be waiting outside). The four portrait sheet finally cost me four euros.
Unfortunately, my photos did not suit; I should have taken my glasses off, which frame was too thick. I had to shoot the photos again, but this time in a urge. I was at a mall, and there was a photo lab, well equipped for this purpose. However, there was no one at the counter, and the sheet was at the expensive price of eight euros. After a 5 minute wait, I decided to enter the automatic photo booth that was just in front.
The machine — from a company I didn't know — was of an older generation. It was less picky about the portrait frame, but I only had two attempts. Finally, portraits were ugly: the photo was under-exposed, lighting was greenish, and on top of that, a wide angle lens was used, which made my nose and forehead look huge. This is the picture that is shown on my ID card: I have to cope with it for ten years.
After that episode, as I am an amateur photographeur, I asked my fiancée to shot my portrait. After more than two hours spent on Photoshop to understand how this dawn software works and do savant calculations of resolution, sizes in millimetres and size in pixels, I finally had a sheet of photos. Once it was printed, I was pretty happy with the result. (I would state later that my face did not really fit the official template).
This brings the two principles that conducted the design of PortraiMatic
These two principles sometimes force me to make choices: I'd rather make PortraiMatic so simple that some users will not like it, than not follow either of these two principles.

At last, version 10.4 of PortraiMatic is here.
The update is free The application can update by itself. Go to the PortraiMatic > Preferences menu , then to Updates > Check now.
As we shall see, there is a lot of new features which are essentially answers to user requests.

This was a very popular request since the first version. However, it took me a lot of time to decide to implement it, for reasons that I shall explain in a later post.
You'd better try it. Push the button
Again, a popular request. I have nothing particular to say, except that Black & White photos are not accepted in every countries. You should read National Guidelines for your own country to make sure.
The aim was to fix a recurring problem. Some cameras are not equiped to detect in which orientation (horizontal or vertical) photos are shot. In other cases, Apple's API don't take into account the orientation information; I thought it only concerned RAW files but it happens with JPEGs as well. This issue is now fixed.
PortraiMatic presents only two windows, but until now I must comfess I didn't put much work in the second one: Preferences. There's essentially a change in the way it looks, with icons and smooth transitions between tabs, so it looks much more to what is found in other Mac programs.
However, a new General tab appeared, with two options: once a JPEG file is generated, it may be shown in the Finder or it may be opened.
I added a new country: Republic of Ireland. PortraiMatic has only one Irish customer, but I guess she will be glad anyway. There is also a new Send Feedback menu item in the Help menu, to drop us a line (see previous post). As I usually say: "Don't hesitate to use it" !

A new page to write us appeared on our web site.
We used to show our e-mail address, but only a few people would write us. We hope that we'll receive a lot of your remarks, suggestions of improvements, opinions, questions. You don't even have to leave your e-mail address, so don't think twice.
As a consequence, we put an end to the questionnaire that you could (optionally) fill once you have bought PortraiMatic. Thanks again to the ones who took the time to fill it. Most of your suggestions will make their way sooner or later in PortraiMatic. Keep on sending suggestions: they help us establishing priorities in the development of the application and give us some ideas. You directly benefit from it.

A new version of PortraiMatic was published yesterday evening. As usual, let's see what's new.
The Source Code of PortraiMatic is continually being refactored , that is, parts of it are rewritten to make it more readable or easier to evolve, without adding any new feature. I actually factorised the part which computes the layout of portraits on a sheet, this code being only slightly different for sheets "to save" and sheets "to print".
I thought it was a good occasion to add a few fatures while my mind was still on it:

None of these settings are saved. It is left to do in a next version.
Only the margin between portraits can be set. Here is a tip: this margin can be as wide as 50 mm. This is a good way to save ink, until PortraiMatic offers a more appropriate way to choose the number of portraits on a sheet.
Being able to adjust exposure, contrast and brightness of a photo has being requested since version 1.0. Here it is at last!

Adjusting is done thanks to a histogram. This tool is not as complex as it looks at first. I won't go into details of its function here, as it is well described in the Help.
If we had an average consumer approach here, we would have placed a Brightness slider and a Contrast slider; these two concepts are well understood by users, but has a major drawback: adjusting exposure with these sliders is really hard. Yet, exposure — which is a concept that casual photographers do not necessarily understand — matters the most, and a histogram is a great way to adjust it precisely.
The real difficulty in this feature was to make it run fast: computing a histogram is a heavy calculation. I'm rather satisfied with the result. It was also necessary to change how a portrait is displayed. Indeed, the portrait template should not show while the photo is being adjusted, which would be disturbing. Hence, the template only shows when the mouse cursor hovers above the portrait, or when adjusting the scale. At rest, a white frame provides a good idea of the final portrait.
That is all for this version. As usual, don't hesitate to drop us a line if you have any suggestion.

A new version of PortraiMatic was released yesterday. Let's see what's new.
You may now define your own portrait formats:

This is only a first step, I'll probably improve it some day.
Until now, registering a license worked as follows: the user received an XML file carrying the .PortraiMaticLicense extension; PortraiMatic declares it is capable of opening this type of files, so the Finder ought open them with PortraiMatic and no other. Double-clicking the file should be enough for PortraiMatic to read the file and to validate the license.
However, certain users running Mac OS 10.6.2 faced a bug of the Finder: it does not associate the license file with PortraiMatic but with some other random application (Safari, MSN Messenger, iChat…). I adopted the same mechanism than Écoute which seems elegant to me. The registration procedure now consists in dragging the license file to the Preferences window. Please note, however, that the old procedure still works for most users. To be true, I never managed to reproduce the bug on my own computer.
And that's all for this time. The next version will be more ambitious and should come sooner.
P.S.: I realised that Automatic Updating was not enabled by default in previous versions: I advise you to change this setting in the Preferences pane, and update PortraiMatic this manner (which is the easiest).

One month after the release of version 1.1, here comes version 1.2. Let's see what's new.
I changed the main window again. It now looks like:

Compare with the previous version:

Some might see a regression compared to the previous version, as the action of reframing cannot be seen instantly on the sheet. However, I do think that what matters is not how beautiful the sheet is, but to reframe as dictated by guidelines. This change in the user interface was needed — to my taste — for two reasons. The first one is I planned evolutions of PortraiMatic, and I needed to gain space. The second one, is that, that way, PortraiMatic gets closer to Delicious Generation applications.
Now, when you slide a portrait to place the face into the oval, some indications appear. The need for this feature has been imposed to me by my reflections about the fact that people don't read user manuals (see previous posts).
I discovered by accident a bug in the previous version. If you were to create a portrait, were to drop an image, and then were to change the name of the portrait, then, at the next start-up, PortraiMatic would not find the image. The cause of the problem was that the old access path to the image was stored. I have rewritten the code that copies images into the Gallery, so they are immediately after the image is chosen, and not when the application was quitted, like it used to be. This should fix a lot of problems.

By Renaud Pradenc on Tuesday, September 15 2009, 09:24 - PortraiMatic
PortraiMatic currently includes the formats of passport photographs of 19 countries. Why only nineteen ? Because, for a format to be integrated, I need to find a link to official guidelines that are really, well, official. That is, national guidelines that are found on a governmental site, not obsolete ones, found on the obscure web site of a hermit photographer.
And that is the difficult task. Some countries don't seem to propose such a document on line (Portugal, for example). Finding these sites gets even more difficult when countries use an alphabet that I can't read (Arab, Asian, Greek, Cyrillic…).
By the way, to my great surprise, PortraiMatic sells in countries that are not managed ! For instance, I have clients in Russia or Hungary. In conclusion: to get the format of your country included in PortraiMatic, send me the link to the national guidelines, and I promise the format will get incorporated quickly.
